Paid Professional Development Program-Applications Now Available!

The Life Sciences Summer Institute (LSSI) application for Teacher Externship Program are now available by emailing biotech@workforce.org

The Teacher Externship Program is a 12-day paid professional development program designed to work with high school science and community college teachers to understand and increase awareness of the local life sciences industries (biotechnology, medical devices, diagnostics, and related areas). This year the program will run from July 8-July 23, 2010 at Biogen Idec’s state of the art community lab.
Key Features of the Program:
Curriculum Training (Standards Based): High school and community college teachers are trained on the AMGEN-Bruce Wallace Biotechnology Laboratory Program at the Biogen-Idec Community Laboratory.
Externships:Teachers visit a variety of industry sites for half day “externships” to view both hard skills and soft skills in practice. Exposure to working professionals allows teachers the opportunity to explore educational outcomes in the workplace.
Ongoing Support for Curriculum Implementation:Teachers who have no equipment or follow on support receive free supplies, loaner equipment, and staff support to implement the curriculum (Grant funding from Amgen Foundation)
Continuing Education Credits:Available for qualified applicants through Cal State San Marcos Continuing Education.
Paid Opportunity: Paid weekly through a staffing agency, lunch provided everyday, and transportation included to and from externships.

Teacher Externship Program applications are due March 27, 2010
