Science as Art Contest

DEADLINE TO ENTER HAS PASSED

Science as Art Contest (a BioEASI.org initiative)

BioEASI and the San Diego Science Festival celebrate the San Diego research community with a Science as Art contest, encouraging submissions of art ranging from primary images generated by researchers to researchers’ interpretations of science with traditional artistic tools. Rewards will include cash prizes and public display of art. Since art is valued for its capacity to communicate to people in a way that words cannot, it presents itself as a way for making the most complex issues of science comprehensible to anyone and everyone. The ultimate goal is to reignite public interest in and subsequent support for the sciences by making basic research more accessible and meaningful to everyone with art. Read more at www.BioEASI.org

Prizes:

1st: $250

2nd: $150

3rd: $100

Winners and runner-ups will also receive a small gift.

Deadline of Submission: February 28, 2009

Guidelines for Artwork

The artwork should present original science and should fit into at least one of the following categories:

    * Photographs/Pictures - Digital photographs obtained by cameras, microscopes, telescopes, and similar instruments. Images created by sensors are also appreciated.

    * Illustrations/Drawings - Traditional or computer-assisted illustrations and drawings produced to conceptualize the unseen or recreate an object, process or phenomenon (technique). Illustrations and drawings rely primarily on the created image to convey meaning.

Eligible Entries

    * Produced or commissioned by practicing researchers from San Diego research laboratories, universities, and industries. Researchers include undergraduates, graduate students, research associates and technicians, post-doctoral fellows, senior scientists, and principal investigators.

    * Clearly fits into a category.

    * Submission materials must be in English.

Ineligible Entries

    * Submissions from publishing companies, advertising agencies, or public relations firms. Also submissions that market, advertise, or promote a commercial product will not be honored. A commercial product is allowed only if it promotes science (not the product itself).

    * More than three submissions by the same person

    * Submissions by members on the judging panel.

    * 3D art and/or sculptures

Selection and Prizes

    * The entries will be judged by a panel. Read about our judges

    * Winners and runner-ups will be used by BioEASI for display at the San Diego County Administration Building, at the San Diego Science Festival, and various locations in San Diego in 2009.

    * 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will receive cash prizes ($250, $150, and $100 respectively)
