Shannon Weiman
Born and raised along the quiet Connecticut shoreline and enduring the frigid winters of upstate New York to complete her Bachelor's degree at Cornell University (Molecular and Cell Biology), San Diego is a big change for Shannon. She misses climbing trees to pick apples and kicking a soccer ball through colorful autumn leaves, but has learned to replace these joys with climbing awesome rocks in Joshua Tree and kicking herself for making stupid mistakes in the lab. Having received her PhD from the Biomedical Sciences program at UCSD in August (Microbiology/Infectious Disease), Shannon is ecstatic to begin a new chapter in her life writing about science. She hopes to bring the enthusiasm and respect she feels for the discipline to her readers, and motivate a more informed and science-friendly community. Shannon also enjoys traveling to exotic destinations, ski trips to Mammoth, mountain biking in Utah, volunteering at the San Diego Zoo, adventures in experimental baking, and doing handstands in precarious locations.

Kelly Lagor
Born and raised in Chicago, Kelly received her bachelors degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and is currently working towards her PhD in Biology at the University of California, San Diego, where she studies plant-pathogen interactions. She plans on pursuing a career as a science writer following graduation. On her free time, she likes to read and write fiction, play Rock Band and watch cartoons. She is currently working on her first novel and a series of webcomics with a fellow graduate student.

Jennifer Rust
Jenn enjoys free food, elegant scientific design, roller coasters, sneezing, really clean Western blots, beer, watching competitive eating competitions on TV, cheering at the roller derby, all holidays, when she finishes her bench-work just in time for lab meeting, insane physics theories, coffee and the zoo. She once participated in writing a really bad haiku using only the amino acid alphabet. She is currently a graduate student at the University of California, San Diego, where she studies protein degradation.

Cindy Buchner
Growing up as a competitive swimmer with most of her time spent in the pool, Cindy knew first hand the benefits of exercise on health and happiness. After spending the past few years working for a pharmaceutical company reviewing documents related to diabetes and obesity, she's seen the benefits quantified, become more resolute, and recently declared herself an exercise evangelist. When she's not writing or editing scientific documents, you can find her walking her dog, digging in the garden, or dragging her family to 5k runs.

Mariano Loza Coll
I was born and lived the first 25 years of my life in Argentina. And no, I do not know how to dance the tango or play soccer. After getting my BSc degree from the University of Buenos Aires, I spent seven awesome though cold years in Canada, while working towards my PhD and early postdoctoral training.
I then landed in beautiful Sunny Diego, to continue my postdoctoral training at UCSD-Biology. My research deals with the genetics of development using the fruit fly as an experimental model. My much broader interest, however, is in the complexity of regulatory mechanisms in living systems. In a way, you may say I aspire to become an old-school systems biologist, interested in the non-linearity of biological regulation.I also think that the gap between disciplines within science and, much more scarily, between scientists and society is widening quickly. For that reason, I am also a strong advocate and active participant of projects that have to do with getting scientists to communicate with each other and the rest of society. Hence my proudly being part of the MySDscience Writing Staff.
