I helped co-found in 1996 and currently manage the University of California San Francisco’s technology transfer office which generates over a third of the license income from UC's 10-campus system. I also maintain an independent biotechnology consulting practice, founded in 1990, that serves the needs of entrepreneurs, investors, and biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. At UCSF my office is responsible for evaluating, managing and licensing UCSF’s intellectual property, and helping create start-up biotechnology and medical device companies. I am currently a strategic business and technology advisor to Birchmere Ventures III LP, Technology Venture Corporation, the Technology Management Division of Recruit Co. Ltd. (Tokyo), and the Gerson Lehrman Group’s Healthcare Council. Previously, I held biotechnology R&D management positions of increasing responsibility with Stauffer Chemical Company (acquired by Zeneca), Berlex Biosciences, and Ribogene. Prior to joining industry, I was on the research faculty at Harvard Medical School. I have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Harvard University, where I trained in the laboratory of James D. Watson, a 1962 Nobel laureate, and a B.A. in Chemistry from Pomona College (magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa).
