The problem with using abbreviations when trying to reach a broader audience

So the other night, I was channel surfing when a confusing commercial interrupted the comfy brain numbing sensation television usually provides.
It featured Noah Whyle (sp?), who was on the show ER a decade ago, blathering on about the WWF and Polar Bears. He mentioned the WWF a number of times and the imagery showed polar bears swimming from small patches of ice and the letters "WWF" were featured prominently on the screen.
