About Me:
Michael Bales is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. Michael is a 2009 PhD graduate of the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University. Prior to his doctoral studies he served in Africa as a short-term consultant with the World Health Organization (WHO), where he helped the Togo Ministry of Health and the WHO offices in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, to build national capacity in data management and analysis. His current research focuses on applying high-throughput text mining approaches to improve interdisciplinary scientific collaboration. Other interests include social network analysis, visualization, interaction design, natural language processing, medical terminologies, geographic information systems, epidemiology, and global health.
